medical ONCOLOGY

Medical oncologists specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer — at times prescribing chemotherapy or other medication.

Effective August 1, 2023, Maury Regional Cancer Center’s medical oncology and hematology team — Drs. Mark Messenger, Romany Johnpulle and Varun Dhulipala — are members of Tennessee Oncology. The team will continue to provide care on site at the Maury Regional Cancer Center.

Medical oncology and hematology services are provided by specially trained physicians and staff, offering the latest in treatment options for all patients as well as world-class clinical trials. Patient and family support services include palliative care, integrative oncology, psychosocial, nutrition, survivorship and genetic counseling.

RADIATION ONCOLOGY

Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to destroy cancer cells or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain.

Radiation treatments are delivered in the Maury Regional Cancer Center by a sophisticated team who utilize advanced technology to precisely deliver radiation while sparing healthy tissues. Radiation oncologists are complemented by a team that includes simulation technologists, dosimetrists, physicists, radiation therapists and nurses.

Technologies continue to advance in the area of radiation therapy. Among these is image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy to aid in the delivery of radiation and enhance the precision of treatment for inoperable masses and cancers on highly sensitive organs, such as the liver, lungs and brain.
